The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus is the ideal specimen of the achievements and experience of the ancient Greeks on theatre construction. It was already been praised in antiquity for its symmetry and beauty. The theatre was used for musical and poetical contests and theatrical performances. Since 1954 theatrical performances of ancient drama are taking place during a summer festival. In 1988, the theatre, along with the entire Sanctuary of Asklepios, was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
